Product of the week ...

This week AW Basics recommends Neuff Equipment’s range of specialist coaching manuals which are ideal reading material for beginners

ATHLETES and coaches looking to improve their technical knowledge of individual events will find their thirst for information satisfied if they check out the books for sale at the track and field supplier Neuff Equipment.

The company, which is run by Alan Neuff, a trained research scientist and UK Athletics level 4 coach, has been in business since 1966 and the Neuff stand will be familiar to visitors of events such as the English Schools’ Championships and many others.

Neuff also has its own website, though, which lists the goods for sale – everything from training and competition equipment through to books.

One of the downfalls in the sport in recent years is that Britain’s great tradition of producing technical athletics coaching material has slowed down to a plod. Apart from publications such as The Coach magazine, there are very few sources of good coaching advice. But Neuff continues to sell a great collection of athletics coaching books.

An example is ‘An Introduction to Triple Jump’, which is written by Neuff himself. The book is an easy-to-read, definitive guide to triple jumping that begins with chapters about teaching beginners, conditioning and warming up through to details on how to train with free weights, plus chapters on circuit training, psychology and nutrition.

The images are very simple (pen pictures as opposed to photographs) and arguably look a little dated, but this does not stop them being effective and useful.

The book is also, Neuff stresses, a beginners’ guide and intended to act as an introduction to the event and does not, therefore, include training programmes for higher-level performers.

Other books in the Neuff Equipment range, though, are suitable for more advanced levels.

Coaching manuals aside, Neuff also sells rules handbooks written by the IAAF, UKA and the IPC, plus scoring tables for schools and international athletics, and one of the newest additions to his range is a ‘Training and Performance Diary’ so athletes can log their conditioning sessions, training and performances.
