Product of the week ... This week AW Basics recommends a personal timing system that could enhance your training HS SPORTS, the company behind the timing equipment of the World Championships, the Commonwealth Games and marathons worldwide, have brought out a personal timing system that is not only cost effective, but highly accurate too. The Freelap system has been tested against the exceptionally technical, not to mention expensive, equipment used in major competitions and the accuracy is said to be within one tenth of a second. It works by using a wireless transmitter and a watch. Every time you pass a transmitter the stopwatch automatically records and displays the lap time and speed. At £55 for a transmitter and £99 for the watch the system is competitive with many more basic watches. If you require heart rate information, the system can incorporate this functionality too. In fact, using the heart rate strap, which retails at £130, instead of the watch can arguably make the device even more accurate as it is the strap which fits around the chest that sends the signal to the wireless transmitter. Placed at the finish, the transmitter will record the exact time a runner’s chest crosses the line. The system can simply work with one transmitter, recording lap times each time you pass through the field. However, for the keener athlete more transmitters can be used. For instance, if 10 transmitters are used on a 100m sprint placed at 10m intervals, the system will record the time at each 10m stage and then the information can be downloaded onto the free Freelap Manager Software and analysed to see which part of the race is weakest and needs most improvement. Obviously this could also be applied to other distances. If you do not mind spending a little more, then sprinters can also purchase a start button on which they place their thumb at the start position for £49. When they release the button the timing starts.
