THERE were few surprises among the winners of each category in the AWreaders’ athletes of the year, although some of the runner-up places make for interesting reading.

European 800m bronze medallist Becky Lyne emerged as the most prolific winner, topping the votes in three different categories – top British woman, best British performance and best British breakthrough.

Meanwhile Asafa Powell scooped the best international man and best international performance accolades, amassing a staggering 51.9 per cent of the votes in the former category ahead of China’s Liu Xiang.

Despite a few isolated efforts of mass-voting – especially in the junior categories – the photocopied entry forms and repeated emails were still not enough to usurp the somewhat more genuine votes.

Finally, counting the votes provided much amusement in reading the many different spellings of athletes’ names. “Becky Lynn” and “Alan Turner” received a few votes each, while many voted for “Harry A-A” in the junior men’s category. But given that the names in our results pages are far from perfect each week, we will forgive the odd spelling error!

After receiving almost 1500 votes, a big thanks goes to all who posted or emailed their choices to us. And while counting them all was not so much fun, we hope you enjoy reading the results.
