Campbell not publicity hunter

SPRINTS: Controversial outburst in Gothenburg was not done to attract attention, says speed king Campbell

DARREN CAMPBELL denies that his outburst on the final night of the European Championships was an attempt to gain publicity, writes Jason Henderson.

The 32-year-old refused to join his gold medal-winning team-mates on a lap of honour in Gothenburg and suggested, in a confused fashion, that it was due to Dwain Chambers’ doping history.

But he insists he did not do it to attract attention to himself. “I didn’t do it for publicity,” he said, speaking at last week’s Celtic Cup in Scotland. “I’m retiring this week, so I would have got the publicity anyway.”

Campbell also said his comments in Gothenburg - and subsequent interviews 24 hours later during a flying visit to China - were not a direct attack on Chambers. “I was probably one of the first people to see Dwain when the news (of his positive test) first broke and he was an empty shell. Of course I feel sorry for him.”

Campbell, however, feels Chambers should tell the anti-doping authorities everything he knows and the Manchester man is annoyed that his coach, Linford Christie, continues to be criticised for his past doping ban.
