60 CLASSIC MOMENTS - No. 28 Thompson defeats big rival to win second gold
IN THE 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, Britain’s Daley Thompson stormed to victory. If he could perform to a similar standard in Los Angeles in 1984, and take the title once again, he would become the first athlete in Olympic history to win gold twice in this event. Two days of thrilling competition were to follow, during which this most outstanding of athletes would treat the crowd to a spectacle of competition, resulting in glory for Great Britain once again. In Los Angeles, Thompson’s main rival was to be Germany’s Jürgen Hingsen, a man he had already beaten on six occasions. Hingsen, however, would not be easy to defeat, as he was the world recordholder, with a score of 8798. The first day started out well for Thompson, with a time of 10.44 over 100m, and a personal best of 8.01m in the long jump. He threw 15.72m in the shot, but Hingsen made some progress in the high jump. Thompson then finished the day with an excellent 46.97 over 400m, and was 114 points ahead of his rival at the halfway point.
