British athlete lands sprint double

GREAT BRITAIN’S David Weir completed an outstanding 100m/200m double to confirm he is the world’s outstanding male wheelchair sprinter.

Weir, 26, who triumphed in the 100m by four-hundredths of a second on the opening day of the championships, was much more dominant in the half-lap race.

The Velocity Wheelchair Racing club athlete held a clear advantage as he entered the home straight and stretched further ahead of the field to stop the clock in 25.47 – just four hundredths outside his lifetime best.

Kenny van Weeghel of Holland picked up his second silver medal of these championships behind Weir, recording a time of 25.80, with Thailand’s Supachai Koysub winning the bronze medal by three hundredths of a second from Finland’s Paralympic champion Leo- Pekka Tahti, who was a disappointing fourth.

Weir, who won the bronze medal in this event at last summer’s Paralympic Games – behind Tahti and Van Weeghel – is clearly a much improved athlete this year.
