Nelson’s 200m calling

World youth 100m silver medallist Alex Nelson said the 200m might be his “true calling” after setting a British under-18 best of 20.69 two weekends ago

Despite running the event for the first time this year and never having gone below 22 seconds, the 17-yearold took three hundredths from Tim Benjamin’s mark when running for Stoke in a British League match.

To prevent a return of old injuries, Nelson has concentrated on the 100m this year, adding a European junior bronze medal last month to his world youth silver. He has also matched Mark Lewis-Francis’ British youth 100m best of 10.31.

Nelson, who missed most of last year through injury said: “I haven’t done the 100m and 200m this year because I was so worried about my hamstrings that I thought it would be asking too much to double up.”

However, he said on the day of his record, which also took him to the top of the world youth rankings: “People have always said I look more like a 200m runner and that my sprinting style is more suited to the half-lap but I was never so sure about that. I wasn’t too keen on the amounts of training needed to be a successful 200m runner. Personally, I think maybe the 200m could be my better event because I have ran this (20.69) purely off raw 200m ability.

I think I could have gone 20.5 today with a slightly better start.
