60 CLASSIC MOMENTS - No. 30 Hemery takes Olympic gold with a world record FOR Chichester-born David Hemery, the 1968 Olympic Games proved to be the pinnacle of a magnificent career. Despite having missed the entire 1967 season through injury, Hemery went into the Games with high hopes he could strike gold.
The sprint hurdler had previously asserted his pedigree with an impressive win in the 1966 Commonwealth 100m hurdles final, and was in the form of his life after setting six UK records in the summer of 1968 prior to the Games. Hemery’s personal best going into the high-altitude setting of Mexico City, stood at 49.6 with the world record a proud 48.8. Benefiting from the high-altitude, the times were super-quick and John Sherwood smashed Hemery’s UK and Commonwealth record with 49.3 in the semi-finals only for Hemery, in the second semi, to equal the mark. The final turned out to be a memorable affair for the British.
