WILL ASAFA POWELL ever get a shot at winning a major
championship?

Back in the 2003 World championships, both he and Jon Drummond were disqualified in the infamous “I did not move” incident.

Some months later, he looked to be a danger at the World Indoor Championships but injured himself in the semi-finals.

Then, in Athens last year, came the biggest disappointment of all. He finished fifth in the Olympic 100m final and came away from Athens emptyhanded, despite being tipped to win as many as three medals.

His 2005 season picked up where he left it last year with several sub-10 clockings, culminating with a world record of 9.77 which he had seemed destined to achieve for a good while.

Since then, however, he has been dealt a devastating blow – one which has ruled him out of Helsinki.

In Powell’s absence, Justin Gatlin is now the overwhelming favourite.
