Weir gets top US world champs role British star to help American throwers in Helsinki
BOB WEIR, one of Britain’s finest discus exponents, is to become the throws coach for the US world championship team in Helsinki later this month, writes Steve Landells. The 44-year-old former Birchfield Harrier, who won the 1982 Commonwealth hammer title and 16 years later claimed Commonwealth discus gold, has spent much of his career in the USA and is currently head coach at Stanford University in California. Weir was given the prestigious role on the US team after athletes unanimously voted him into the position in December. “I was surprised at first,” added Weir on being given the role. “But it was a wonderful compliment. The main role I have is to provide support for the athletes. “I’m more of a co-ordinator than a coach and I’ll be paying attention to what athletes will be doing when they are competing. “It is a very different set-up to Britain. America rotate their coaches from championship to championship, so they could have a different throws coach for the World Indoor Championships.”
