60 CLASSIC MOMENTS - No. 31 Brilliant Jackson rules the world
WELSHMAN Colin Jackson had a tough act to follow at the 1993 IAAF World Championships because Britain had already achieved two gold medals at the event in the shape of Linford Christie in the 100m and Sally Gunnell in the 400m hurdles. Jackson went to Stuttgart in the form of his life. Having recently set a European record of 12.97 and remaining unbeaten in the 110m hurdles discipline during the countdown to the championships, he was the man of the moment. The preliminary rounds were a breeze for the Malcolm Arnoldcoached athlete, winning his heat and semi in 13.23 and 13.13 respectively. The major threat came from fellow Briton Tony Jarrett, the 1991 world bronze medallist, who clocked 13.14 in his semi-final. A third British athlete, Andy Tulloch, ran a superb race to finish third in his semi-final in 13.79. The Olympic silver medallist from 1988 now had a chance to banish his world championship demons, after failing under the spotlight before. Jackson had the fastest reaction time in the final and blasted away to a new world record time of 12.91, a time that still stands today, although no longer alone.
