Benjamin beats Olympic champion Wariner on a night of surprises

JUST four hours inside Crystal Palace saw a sharp rise in the hopes of the Great Britain men’s team at next month’s IAAF World Championships in Helsinki. Seen, thanks largely to injuries to some world-class athletes, as a collection of no-hopers before the world’s best athletes descended on the capital, suddenly there are British males who can compete at the highest level.

Nathan Douglas confirmed himself as a medal contender in Helsinki by beating a top-class field in the triple jump. Tim Benjamin claimed he was also in that bracket after beating the Olympic champion in the 400m.

Michael East competed competently with the world’s best to lead a series of top British performances in the 1500m and Jason Gardener clocked his quickest time of the year in an exciting 100m.
