SPORT INJURIES: UK Athletics’ medical team is decimated after Chelsea Football Club signs four key staff

CHELSEA Football Club has headhunted four members of UK Athletics’ medical team, writes Jason Henderson.

UKA’s former chief medical officer, Bryan English, former chief physiotherapist Dean Kenneally, assistant doctor Alex Nieper and masseur Pedro Phillipou, have all joined the west London football club in recent months.

Helped by its billionaire owner, Roman Abramovich, Chelsea FC has built a team that has established itself as the No.1 side in England, winning the 2004/2005 Premiership title by 12 points. But Chelsea’s ability to beat rival clubs when it comes to signing top players is not just limited to footballers on the pitch. With huge funds at its disposal, the club has attracted the services of some of the best medical experts in track and field.

English headed the British athletics medical team at the Athens Olympics, but has since moved to become chief medical officer at Chelsea, where he has restructured the club’s medical system.
