St Mary’s camp proves a winner
THERE is no better breeding ground than an endurance centre and there are no better people to learn from than those who have made it – as 84 of the country’s top youngsters found out last week, writes Richard Lewis. Funded by the Flora London Marathon and supported by adidas, some of the best and most promising athletes in Britain attended a weeklong course at the St Mary’s University in Twickenham, the home of UK Athletics’ endurance centre. There were youngsters from the ages of nine upwards including Adam Hickey and Stephanie Twell, who have represented Britain in the world cross country championships. But it was not all about training and coaching. It was about how to prepare to be an athlete and what it takes to make it. Mick Woods, UKA’s Endurance Performance Centre Manager and Squad Coach at St Mary’s, said: “We wanted to get athletes with the right ambitions and the right talent, hoping to help influence to introduce things into their training and support stuff like core stability work, drills and stretching.
