Ohuruogu and England in PB form in Hengelo
Olympic 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu improves her 200m PB to 22.85, whilst Hannah England and Simeon Williamson also impress at the FBK Games
CHRISTINE OHURUOGU continued her low-key build-up to the World Championships in Berlin with a 200m lifetime best at the FBK Games in Hengelo, June 1.
The Commonwealth, world and Olympic champion ran a very typical race but the 25-year-old was successful in lowering her lifetime best to 22.85 to finish second behind Laverne Jones-Ferrette from the US Virgin Islands, who is proving to be one of the revelations of the outdoor season with another national record of 22.46.
Ohuruogu was by no means the fastest out of the blocks but the Newham & Essex Beagle’s strength told as she moved from fifth off the bend to a comfortable second, pulling clear of her compatriot Joice Maduaka in third (23.22), who ran her fastest time since 2007, and was also sixth in the 100m (11.50.)
Donna Fraser was sixth in 23.64.
Last year’s NCAA champion Hannah England improved her 1500m lifetime best in her first race of the outdoor season. The 22-year-old placed seventh in a PB of 4:05.87, finishing ahead of the Olympic champion Nancy Lagat from Kenya, who faded in the final 600m to 11th (4:07.89.)
Commonwealth champion and Olympic fourth placer Lisa Dobriskey was slightly short of fitness, placing 15th (4:09.66.)
The race was won by the world indoor champion Gelete Burka from Ethiopia, who set a lifetime best and world-leading mark of 3:58.79.
Simeon Williamson backed up his victory in Belgrade on Friday with a third place finish in the final of the 100m, defeating two of his compatriots to gain the spoils on the domestic front. The European under-23 champion clocked a season’s best of 10.09 (10.18 ht), to finish behind the Olympic fourth placer Churandy Martina (9.97) and Monzavous Edwards (10.02.)
Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, who won his heat in a season’s best of 10.18 ran one-hundredth faster in the final to place fourth, whilst world finalist Marlon Devonish was fifth.
Olympic 200m finalist Christian Malcolm was eliminated in the heats, placing eighth in 10.50.
Jenny Meadows almost pulled off another shock victory in the 800m but the European indoor finalist, who stunned the Olympic champion Pamela Jelimo in Rabat placed third in a season’s best of 2:00.15. The 28-year-old was narrowly denied by the world 1500m champion Maryam Jamal (1:59.98), whilst Yuliya Krevsun from Ukraine closed strongly to take second (2:00.04.)
Marilyn Okoro faded slightly over the last 30m but her season’s debut of 2:00.58 was more than satisfactory, whilst Charlotte Best was 10th (2:05.38.)
Elsewhere, Tom Lancashire was eighth in the 1500m (3:37.67), Montell Douglas was seventh in the 100m (11.62) and Gemma Bennett placed ninth in the 100m hurdles (13.40.)
