The 28-year-old defeats a world-class field, including the Olympic champion Pamela Jelimo from Kenya and Russia’s Yekaterina Kostetskaya
JENNY MEADOWS had a marvellous season’s debut at the 2nd Meeting International Mohammed VI in Rabat. The 28-year-old delivered Pamela Jelimo her first ever defeat over 800m, proving that the Olympic champion is not invincible, after a series of destructive performances on the Golden League circuit last season. Jelimo finished a paltry sixth (2:02.46.)
Meadows’ winning time was 2:01.78 and not only did the world indoor finalist take the scalp of the third fastest athlete of all-time, Meadows defeated the formidable Russian Yekaterina Kostetskaya, who boasts a lifetime best of 1:56.67.
Olympic 400m champion Christine Ohuruogu had a satisfactory performance in the 200m but the 25-year-old suffered another defeat to the hands of Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie from Bahamas, one week after the Bahamian defeated the Brit at the Bupa Great City Games.
The former world 200m champion clocked 23.08, whilst Ohuruogu’s performance of 23.27 was good enough to finish second.
European indoor finalist Donna Fraser was fifth (23.88), whilst Montell Douglas and Anyika Onuora were seventh and eighth, clocking 24.38 and 24.55 respectively.
In the 1500m, world junior 1500m champion Stephanie Twell set a season’s best of 4:09.35 to place seventh, whilst her compatriot Emma Pallant set a lifetime best of 4:09.96, which was her first performance under the 4:10 barrier.
After a good victory in Pavia, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey was slightly off the pace today. The former world junior champion was fifth in the 100m in 10.51, whilst Simeon Williamson failed to finish the 100m, before clocking an inauspicious 21.73 in the 200m.
Yahya Berrabah pleased the Moroccan crowd with a fine victory in the long jump, leaping 8.36m.
Abubaker Kaki from Sudan won the 800m in 1:44.82, whilst Paul Kipsiele Koech from Kenya took the 3000m steeplechase (8:07.80.)
