Ohuruogu favoured for victory in Ostrava
By Steven Mills, May 25th 2010

Usain Bolt will also be in action over 300m at the IAAF World Challenge in Ostrava on May 27

OLYMPIC champion Christine Ohuruogu has been enjoying a solid start to the 2010 season and the British No.1 will be looking to continue her upward momentum at the Ostrava Golden Spike on May 27.

The Osaka world champion, who won here in 2008, takes on Beijing runner-up Shericka Williams from Jamaica, as well as the very experienced Russian veteran Natalya Nazarova.

The Newham & Essex Beagle is normally far from her best form at the start of the season but the 26-year-old enjoyed a solid performance at the IAAF Diamond League in Doha, where she finished fifth in a season’s best performance of 50.88.

Jamaican superstar Usain Bolt has ruled out setting world records this year but Michael Johnson’s 10-year-old world 300m record of 30.85 could be under threat if the world 100m and 200m record-holder has recovered after racing in Daegu and Shanghai.

Bolt’s compatriot Asafa Powell looks in the form to challenge his five-year-old meeting record of 9.85 in the 100m. The former world record-holder opened his season with victory at the IAAF Diamond League in Doha, where the Commonwealth champion set two very fast wind-aided performances.

British interest will be led by Mark Lewis-Francis, who is returning to solid form after a succession of Achilles injuries, while Tyrone Edgar and Craig Pickering are also in action.

World 110m hurdles record-holder Dayron Robles was surprisingly beaten by David Oliver in Daegu last week but the Olympic champion, who returns to the track where he set his world record, starts as the pre-race favourite ahead of a strong field, which includes world fourth placer Will Sharman and Andy Turner, who comes fresh from a double victory at the Powerade Great City Games.

The British duo of Rhys Williams and David Greene are listed to compete in the 400m hurdles.

Andy Baddeley and Michael Rimmer compete in the 800m but world No.1 David Rudisha from Kenya starts as the outstanding favourite.

UK javelin record-holder Goldie Sayers takes on home favourite Barbora Spotakova while Vicki Hubbard faces Blanka Vlasic in the high jump.
