By Steven Mills, March 21st 2010

In her final race before the Virgin London Marathon, Mara Yamauchi set a season’s best of 69:25 to win the New York Half Marathon

Mara Yamauchi wins in New York City on Sunday

MARA YAMAUCHI took a confidence boosting victory at the New York City Half-Marathon, defeating a very strong field which included former Olympic marathon bronze medallist Deena Kastor.

The 36-year-old, who missed the IAAF World Championships last year with a foot injury, returned to form with a season’s best of 69:25, which was made all the more impressive because of the course is renowned for its undulations.

In the men’s race, Kenya’s Peter Kamais took the title in 59:53 while Haile Gebrselassie was forced to pull out after nine miles with an asthma attack.

After the race, Gebrselassie's manager Jos Hermens said: "I spoke to Haile briefly on the phone. Basically, he had a cold and then during the competition, all of a sudden, I saw a lot of dust. They he clogged up and couldn't breathe properly anymore and he had stopped."
