Sayers to make season’s debut this weekend
By Steven Mills, March 18th 2010

UK javelin record-holder Goldie Sayers leads the British entries at the European Cup Winter Throwing meet in Arles

UK javelin record-holder Goldie Sayers will make her season’s debut at the European Cup Winter Throwing meet in Arles this weekend.

The Olympic fourth placer won this meeting two years ago with an effort of 63.65m and after an injury-plagued 2009 season, Sayers will be determined to start her season well.

Sayers takes on a very competitive field, which includes Olympic silver medallist Mariya Abakumova from Russia, last year’s runner-up Martina Ratej from Slovenia and Germany’s Linda Stahl, who boasts a lifetime best of 66.06m.

Sarah Holt competes in the hammer but the 22-year-old is unlikely to make an impression on world record-holder Tatyana Lysenko and former world champion Betty Heidler from Germany, who lead the entries.

Newly crowned world indoor champion Nadzeya Ostapchuk from Belarus starts as the pre-competition favourite in the shot put while Nicoleta Grasu from Romania takes on former Olympic champion Natalya Sadova in the discus.

In the men’s senior competitions, Alex Smith is the sole British representative and Sale Harrier takes on Olli-Pekka Karjalainen from Finland, Russia’s Aleksey Zagornyi and veteran Italian Nicola Vizzoni in the hammer.

Former world champion Andrey Mikhnevich is the favourite in the shot put while the Spanish duo of Frank Casanas and Mario Pestano are favoured in the discus.

In the under-23 competitions, Brett Morse (discus), Peter Smith (discus) and James Campbell (javelin) will be in action.
