London bid for 2015 IAAF World Championships

UKA enter race to stage prestigious global event

LONDON, Beijing in China and Chorzow in Poland are bidding to stage the 2015 IAAF World Championships.

If successful, the award of the 2015 event would have ramifications for the future of the 2012 Olympic Stadium, which has been the subject of interest from West Ham United.

The International Association of Athletics Federations has announced that letters of intent had been received from the three cities, with a decision to be made in November.

The decision by UKA to bid for the 2015 event follows the disastrous moves almost a decade ago to stage the 2005 IAAF World Championships. Back then, in 2001, the bid to hold the 2005 Championships disintegrated when the Government abandoned plans to develop a venue at Picketts Lock and, much to its annoyance and embarrassment, UKA had to withdraw. The Championships eventually went to Helsinki.
