Emanuel and Browning win mile titles at NCAA Indoors
By Steven Mills, March 14th 2010

Lee Emanuel defended his mile title while compatriot Charlotte Browning won the women’s equivalent

LEE EMANUEL retained his title while Charlotte Browning completed the British double in the mile at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville March 12-13.

Competing for New Mexico University, the defending champion led the preliminaries and in the final, Emanuel was a class above the opposition as the City of Sheffield athlete dipped under the four-minute barrier for the victory in 3:59.76, defeating Mac Fleet, who took second in 4:01.63.

Eighth last year, Browning started among the pre-race favourites after a PB of 4:31.24 last month and the Aldershot Farnham & District athlete extended her unbeaten run in 2010. The 22-year-old stormed to the title in 4:35.66 to defeat Katie Follett (4:36.39).

By far the most impressive performance of the two-day event came from Ashton Eaton, who astonished everyone to produce a world record in the heptathlon with a score of 6499, which easily surpassed Bryan Clay’s winning mark of 6204 from the World Indoor Championships.

The 22-year-old, who only finished 18th at the World Championships in Berlin last year, eclipsed compatriot Dan O’Brien’s world record by 23 points.

Other noteworthy performances came from Francena McCorory in the 400m, who set a US indoor record of 50.54, while Curtis Mitchell set a world-leading mark of 20.38 to win the 200m.

On the infield, Ryan Whiting won the shot put with 21.57m and Blessing Okagbare from Nigeria took the long jump with 6.87m.
