Ennis delivers gold in Doha
By Steven Mills, March 13th 2010

Jessica Ennis lived up to the pre-competition expectations to dominate the pentathlon at the IAAF World Indoor Championships

Jessica Ennis: set championship best performance

JESSICA ENNIS added the world indoor title to the world outdoor heptathlon title she won last year and in similar fashion to Berlin, the 24-year-old led from the very first event.

The 24-year-old, who concluded her competition with a PB in the 800m of 2:12.55, tallied a championship record of 4937 to pull further ahead of the Olympic champion Natallia Dobrynska from Ukraine, who improved her national record to 4851.

After an inauspicious start to the competition, Tatyana Chernova came through well in the final three events to snatch the bronze medal with 4761.

Olympic silver medallist Hyleas Fountain from the USA was relegated to fourth in the 800m but the 29-year-old improved the American pentathlon record to 4753.

For good measure, Ennis also improved Kelly Sotherton’s national pentathlon record from 4927 to 4937 and the Sheffield athlete moves to No.3 on the all-time lists behind world record-holder Irina Belova, whose world record of 4991 has stood since 1992, and former champion Carolina Kluft with 4948.
