Jessica Ennis comes one step closer to the gold medal with a long jump PB of 6.44m
AFTER Jessica Ennis saw her lead diminish significantly after the completion of the shot put, the world heptathlon champion consolidated her position at the top of the leader-board with a great display of competitive jumping.
After a tentative first round effort of 5.98m, the 24-year-od responded well to the pressure of seeing her lead slip as the City of Sheffield athlete produced a lifetime best in the second round of 6.44m for 988 points.
What’s also significant is Hyleas Fountain, who is a 6.89m jumper, made no impression on the gold medal spot as the American could only jump 6.46m, compared to her season’s best of 6.70m.
With only the 800m remaining, Ennis the prime candidate to win the world indoor pentathlon title. The Brit has amassed 4009 points while Olympic champion Natallia Dobrynska stays in silver medal position with 3956 points.
Hyleas Fountain is third with 3943 while Russia’s Tatyana Chernova moves to fourth with 3844.
