Ennis maintains narrow lead in Doha
By Steven Mills, March 13th 2010

Jessica Ennis’s season’s best of 14.01m was enough to cling onto the gold medal spot but Olympic champion Natallia Dobrynska moves from fourth to second

JESSICA ENNIS maintained her lead after the completion of the shot put but the world heptathlon champion saw her lead diminish, as Olympic champion Natallia Dobrynska excelled in the shot put.

Ennis, who was the best 60m hurdler and high jumper of the day, tends to struggle with the shot put and even though the 24-year-old set a season’s best of 14.01m for 795 points and an overall tally of 3021, Dobrynska set a substantial season’s best of 16.43m to move from fourth to second with 3003 and the Ukrainian also has a better long jump PB.

Hyleas Fountain, who set a PB of 14.06m, dropped down to third but the American is a world-class long jumper while Russia’s Tatyana Chernova, who also improved her lifetime best of 14.54m, is also a very talented long jumper and 800m runner.
