By Steven Mills, March 13th 2010

In flying form in Doha, Jessica Ennis clears 1.90m

JESSICA ENNIS extended her ascendancy at the top of the leader-board in Doha after the completion of two events in the pentathlon.

The world heptathlon champion cleared 1.90m in the high jump at her third attempt, which was the best mark achieved in the competition.

Hyleas Fountain of the United States took second with a season’s best clearance of 1.87m before a very close attempt at 1.90m, while Olympic champion Natallia Dobrynska also set a season’s best of 1.84m.

Tatyana Chernova only cleared 1.78m.

Ennis, who received 1106 points for her 1.90m clearance moves onto 2226 points and leads Fountain by 75 points while Frenchwoman Antoinette Nana Djimou Ida is currently third with 2099 points.

Dobrynska moves into fourth with 2046 points but watch for the Ukrainian to make inroads into the leaders in the shot put.

World No.1 Chernova is fifth with 1968 points.

Despite finishing almost four second behind the USA in the heats of the 4x400m, the British quartet qualified for tomorrow’s final as a fastest loser with 3:09.59.

In the 800m, Andrew Osagie narrowly missed making the final by a very narrow margin as Olympic silver medallist Ahmed Ismail from Sudan pipped the UK No.1 on the line for the third qualifying spot in the second semi-final.

In the shot put, Nadzeya Ostapchuk from Belarus powered into the final with a putt of 20.09m while defending champion Valerie Vili eased into the final by 19.81m.
