Meadows eases into 800m final
By Steven Mills, March 12th 2010

Jenny Meadows qualified fastest for Sunday’s 800m final at the IAAF World Indoor Championships

Andrew Osagie: ran 800m PB of 1:47.40 in Doha

WORLD bronze medallist Jenny Meadows sealed her berth for Sunday’s 800m final in Doha with a confident display of front-running.

The 28-year-old UK indoor champion qualified as the fastest for the 800m final with 2:00.39.

The Wigan & District athlete will be joined by the Russian duo of Yevgeniya Zinurova and Mariya Savinova, who looked comfortable en route to qualification, as well as US indoor champion Anna Pierce, who won the first heat in 2:03.05.

UK indoor silver medallist Vicky Griffiths did not get into contention in the first heat and the Liverpool Harrier only finished seventh in 2:04.90.

Carl Myerscough also qualified for the shot put final with a season’s best of 20.44m.

Andrew Osagie, pictured above, crossed the line in third in the first of the 800m heats in a PB of 1:47.40 but the UK No.1 was elevated to second after the disqualification of one of the pre-race favourites Nick Symmonds from the USA.

Ed Aston was fourth in the second heat in 1:50.32.

In her first major event as a senior, Vikki Hubbard did not qualify for the high jump final. The 20-year-old cleared 1.85m for 17th. Meike Kroger, who has cleared 2.00m this year, also did not qualify in one of the shocks of the morning session.

After the completion of two events in the heptathlon, European indoor silver medallist Oleksiy Kazyanov is the leader from defending champion Bryan Clay and world decathlon champion Trey Hardee.
