Aviva Scottish Secondary Cross Country Championships commences this weekend

One of Scotland’s best attended cross-country races features a competitive girls’ under-17 line-up

THE Aviva Scottish Secondary Cross Country Championships takes place on March 13 at Beach Park in Irvine. The event, which is now in its 32nd year, is one of the biggest in Scotland comprising of over 1300 competitors from around 150 different secondary schools travelling from all areas of Scotland to battle it out, in what is the pinnacle for schools cross country.

Heather Smith, Head of Sponsorship at Aviva, said: “Our investment in the Home Country Schools Championships highlights our aim of giving every child in the UK the opportunity to get involved in athletics. As the No.1 sponsor of athletics in the UK since 1999, our goal is to make it easier for athletes of today and tomorrow to reach their sporting goals and we look forward to sharing the successes of our future stars.”

The event will be comprised eight races, split into boys and girls categories with four different age groups: under- 14; 14-15; 15-17 and over 17 years with varying distances for each category.

The girls under-17 race features Emma Dunnet from Thurso High, Olivia MacKenzie from Loretto School and Sarah Cassells from Queen Margaret Academy among the pre-race favourites.

Kathryn Pennel from Queen Anne High and Louisa Stewart from Mary Erskine will make the girls’ 14-15 race highly competitive.

The younger age groups will have a large number of teams as well as individual competitors. The two senior age groups always have a competitive team race with Hutchesons’ Grammar School looking likely for medals in both boys and girls.
