Dobriskey to face world champions Jamal and Burka in Stuttgart 1500m
By AW Staff, February 3rd 2010

After a shock loss at the Glasgow International, Lisa Dobriskey lines up against two-time world champion Maryam Jamal and world indoor champion Gelete Burka at the Sparkassen Cup

WORLD silver medallist Lisa Dobriskey faces a world-class field in the 1500m at the Sparkassen Cup in Stuttgart on February 6. The Commonwealth Games champion was surprisingly lost for pace in the 1500m at the Aviva International in Glasgow but Dobriskey, who has primarily been focusing on endurance training this winter, is likely to find the paced 1500m in Stuttgart more to her liking.

The Ashford AC athlete faces two-time world 1500m champion Maryam Jamal from Bahrain, who pipped Dobriskey for the world title in Berlin by a mere 0.01, as well as reigning world indoor champion Gelete Burka, who comes fresh from winning the BW-Bank Meeting in Karlsruhe in a world-leading mark of 4:03.92.

Glasgow International winner Chris Tomlinson, who set a UK indoor record of 8.18m at this event two years ago, takes on three-time world champion Dwight Phillips in the long jump. This will be the American’s first competition of the year, as the 2004 Olympic champion has been recently focusing on the 60m in order to improve his speed.

Tomlinson also faces the French No.1 Salim Sdiri and the Chinese youngster Li Jinzhe.

European and Commonwealth bronze medallist Andy Turner will be making his season’s debut and the Sale Harrier faces a formidable 60m hurdles field, led by Olympic 110m hurdles champion Dayron Robles from Cuba.

Petr Svoboda set a Czech record of 7.50 to win in Karlsruhe and Olympic silver medallist David Oliver is also among the cast which Turner faces.

Sarah Claxton hasn’t found her best form yet but the Woodford Green & Essex Ladies athlete will be aiming to lower her 60m hurdles season’s best of 8.20. The 30-year-old faces world indoor champion and world No.1 Lolo Jones and world silver medallist Priscilla Lopes-Schliep.
