Bolt and Richards scoop top honours in Monte Carlo
By AW Staff, November 23rd 2009

Usain Bolt and Sanya Richards are named World Athletes of the Year

USAIN BOLT claimed his second successive Athlete of the Year award and despite being up against the likes of double world champion Kenenisa Bekele in this category, Bolt was the overwhelming favourite to take this coveted award again.

The Jamaican superstar replicated his Beijing feat, winning three gold medals in Berlin, where he lowered his 100m world record to 9.58 and his 200m record to 19.19. As well as these performances, Bolt also set a 150m world best in the rain in Manchester to kick-start his season, as well as two further sub-19.6 200m performances.

While Bolt stood out as the outstanding luminary in the men’s category, the women’s equivalent boasted a much more competitive shortlist but world 400m champion Sanya Richards prevailed over the likes of Yelena Isinbayeva and Valerie Vili.

Apart from an early season loss in Kingston, Richards has been unbeaten this season and the American record-holder has consistently displayed an unrivalled dominance over her contemporaries. Richards finally claimed her first world title in Berlin as well as winning the Golden League jackpot for the third time.

Richards's coach Clyde Hart won the award for Coach of the Year.
